Housing

Access to safe and affordable housing is a key determinant of women’s health and equality. Investigation into gender- based differences of experiences with housing show that women are disadvantaged in gaining access to home ownership. National statistics also indicate that households headed by women are more likely to be renters and are disproportionately represented in public and social housing.

Women’s experiences of homelessness, particularly in the North, are also different from men’s. Poverty, family or sexualized violence, mental health issues and addictions are some of the factors that increase women’s vulnerability to homelessness.

The Government of Yukon has undertaken some initiatives to address access to safe and affordable housing for women.

1. Whitehorse Affordable Family Housing Project

The Whitehorse Affordable Family Housing Complex at 60 Selkirk in Riverdale opened its doors to single parent families in November 2010. An onsite program coordinator collaborating with services available to support single parent families has been key to this innovative housing initiative’s success and we look forward to achieving our goals of a safe and peaceful housing community.
